Image Sizes and Resolution
- Image Resolution
describes how much detail is in a picture. In digital images it is
often described as the number of pixels, or "dots", that make up an
image. For instance a camera that takes pictures that are 4000 pixels
wide by 3000 pixels tall will take pictures containing 12,000,000
pixels or 12 megapixels. An image that is 1200 pixels in width and 800 pixels in height has a total of 960,000 pixels or just under 1 megapixel.
- Resolution can also refer to spatial resolution, or how closely
spaced the infomation is that makes up a picture. With digital images,
this is often measured in pixels per inch or ppi. A computer monitor
can usually resovle images with a density of 72 to 100 pixels per
inch. When printing high quality photographs on good photo paper, 300
pixels per inch will make the image appear sharper (assuming the
original image was of high quality). 150 pixels is a good compromise for printing snapshots.
- Image file size in kilobytes or megabytes indicates how much
storage space an image will require on a computer or digital media such
as a storage card. It also affects how long it will take a fileto upload or download from the web. The file size depends on image format, and whether it is compressed or not, as well as on the pixel domensions. If the format and compression are equal, an image that is 800 pixels by 600 pixels will be 1/4 the size of an image that is 1600 by 1200 pixels.

Resizing and Renaming Pictures
Using Image Resizer
On FNSBSD Teacher Laptops, a tool called "Image Resizer"
is installed. It allows users to right-click on a picture or group of
pictures, choose "Resize Pictures" and quickly create smaller copies to
include in e-mail, documents, or websites.
Using Other Programs
Many cameras and scanners include software for editing images.
Microsoft Office Picture manager, and Microsoft Paint can be used for
basic editing and resizing tasks in Windows.
Renaming a Group of Pictures
When copying a group of pictures from a camera storage card, they will
often have names like "DSCN000325.jpg" . Highlight a group of pictures
in Windows Explorer, right-click, and select Rename. Type the name on
the first picture that you want for the whole group
(bball_game_nov14.jpg). The whole group will be renamed with a number
added to the end of the rest of the images { bball_game_nov14.jpg(1),
bball_game_nov14.jpg(2), bball_game_nov14.jpg(3)...}.
